Introduction of Crutch Spike of Railway Rail Fasteners

Jan 19, 2022
Railway Rail fasteners are the key elements of the VSP - devices connecting metal structures to each other and/or to the base (that is, with wooden / reinforced concrete sleepers).

They are also in demand when creating a seamless road, when it is necessary that only the end parts of the lashes are displaced under the influence of external factors, and the average ones remain unchanged even with serious temperature changes. The amount in which they will be used will directly affect the costs of construction and operation. It is not safe to save on them, but it also makes no sense to increase the number of fasteners per kilometer of track, because then the costs of operating the railway will increase.

Initially, when the first railways were being built, crutches were used to connect rails and sleepers. But such an element had many disadvantages, the main one of which was a decrease in pressure with constant vibration from the composition. It was the fight against vibration that complicated the rail fastening device and added a spring element to it, the terminal of the reinforced concrete.

In addition to the connection, these elements solve the following tasks:
1. Reduce the level of vibrations that are transmitted to sleepers, ballast, earth cushion;
2. Provide insulation on the canvas with electric traction and auto-locking;maintain the integrity of the track, helping to withstand the maximum possible loads.
They are divided into two main groups:
Butt - used to connect the links of I-beams to each other;
Intermediate – for fixing metal structures on supporting bases.

Crutch Spike(nail spike, dogspike, fasteners, cut-track spike) - designed for fastening rails and wooden sleepers in the railway track. It is still used in the CIS countries, India, Argentina, but has not been used for a long time in the USA, China, Canada, Germany and Australia.
